Sanjay Roy, who has been convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sealdah court on Monday, January 20. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das in Sealdah had on January 18, 2025 declared Roy guilty of rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee at the hospital on August 9 last year. The mother of the former civic police volunteer who has been convicted of the gruesome crime said she has no problem if the court hangs him for the crime. CBI demanded death penalty for the culprit.

Prior to the punishment sentence, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “We have cooperated with the investigation. We demanded justice but judiciary had to run its course so that’s why it took this much time but we always wanted the victim to get justice.”
Sanjay Roy Claims ‘False Implication’
During the hearing, the judge said to Roy, “I told you the previous day the charges you were convicted against and the charges that have been proven against you.”
Accused Sanjay replied to him, “I have not done anything, neither rape nor murder. I am being falsely implicated. You have seen everything. I am innocent. I already told you that I was tortured. They made me sign whatever they wanted.”

Sanjay Roy Found Guilty
Earlier, on Saturday, the Additional District Judge found accused Sanjay Roy guilty in the RG Kar rape-murder case. After the verdict, Sanjay Roy said to the judge, “I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go. One IPS involved.”
Sections 64 (Rape), 66 (Punishment for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim), and 103/1 (Murder) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were framed against Roy.

Before Sealdah court quantum announcement, the deceased doctor’s father said, “He (accused Sanjay Roy) tried to talk on Saturday, the court asked him to speak on Monday. We have no idea what he will say. He is a criminal, there are other people involved with him. He should be awarded the harshest punishment.”

Background Of The High-Profile Rape-Murder Case
The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar College & Hospital on August 9, 2024. The probe for the high-profile murder and rape case was earlier handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from the Kolkata Police.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage, demonstrations and prolonged protests by junior doctors in West Bengal. The trial in the case started in Kolkata court on November 11. A charge-sheet regarding financial irregularities was filed by CBI at RG Kar in November, 2024.
