Kolkata Rain- 7 dead as heavy rain floods city, metro services hit; railway tracks inundated

Kolkata Rain- In view of the current situation, Kolkata Metro has suspended services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations to ensure passengers’ safety.

Kolkata Rain- At least seven people were killed in Kolkata after heavy overnight rainfall flooded streets in the city. Heavy rain in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal during the night and Tuesday morning has caused massive disruption. Railway tracks and shops were inundated as continuous rainfall led to waterlogging in Howrah. Visuals from South Kolkata also showed severe waterlogging after the incessant downpour. At least five people are reported to have died due to electrocution in Kolkata.

Kolkata Rain- Metro services hit

In view of the current situation, Kolkata Metro has suspended services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations to ensure passengers’ safety. A severe waterlogging has been reported between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar station mid-section. According to Kolkata Metro, truncated services are being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations.

“Due to heavy overnight rain, there is waterlogging between the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar station mid-section. To ensure passenger safety, Metro services have been suspended between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations. Truncated services are being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations. Water is being pumped out. Officers and staff of Metro Railway have reached the spot to address the issue at the earliest,” the statement of Kolkata metro read.

Kolkata Rain- Check weather forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast on Kolkata’s weather, indicates a rainy day on Tuesday, September 23. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to occur at most places over South Bengal with heavy rainfall at one or two places over North Bengal, East and West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas districts. Moreover, thunderstorm, Lightning and gusty wind (speed 30-40kmph) have been predicted for some districts of South Bengal. An orange alert has been issued by the IMD for rainfall in South Bengal districts.

For Kolkata, the IMD has predicted one or two spells of Light to moderate rain / thundershower. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 31˚C and 26˚C respectively.

The low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal currently lies over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal-north Odisha and is influencing the weather system in the state along with other conditions.
