Kolkata Gang Rape Case: Classes Resume At South Kolkata Law College Amid Heavy Police Presence; Union Rooms To Remain Locked

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the West Bengal Higher Education Department to keep student union rooms locked until the student union elections are over and their results are declared.

After more than 10 days of closure following the alleged gang rape of a student by TMC supporter Monojit Mishra and a few others, South Kolkata College resumed classes on Monday. The college was reopened after a heavy deployment of police on the campus. The Calcutta High Court have ordered the resumption of classes as early as possible. Somnath Mukherjee, an advocate and guest lecturer at the college, said the court has given certain directions which will be ensured and followed.

“The high court has given some guidelines, and we will follow them,” Mukherjee told ANI.

However, despite the resumption of classes, the student union rooms will remain locked. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the West Bengal Higher Education Department to keep these rooms locked until the student union elections are over and the results are declared.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the West Bengal Police took the accused arrested in the Kolkata gang rape case to South Kolkata Law College and reconstructed the crime scene. Earlier, the Kolkata High Court, while hearing three PILs related to the case, had sought a response from the state government. The court has also asked why the governing body of the college was not involved in the case.

On July 2, the Kolkata Police said that the case would be handled by its detective department. The incident came to light on June 25. A law student was allegedly gangraped at the South Kolkata Law College in Kasba.

On June 30, the police arrested the main accused, Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19), who were nabbed within hours. They were sent to police custody till July 8 by the Alipore court. At the same time, the fourth accused, security guard Pinaki, was sent to custody till July 4. The police were granted his custody till July 8.
