A 25-year-old food delivery boy was burnt to death after a car hit his bike from behind and it caused a fire in Kolkata's Salt Lake on Thursday. Police said the deceased has been identified as Rahul Mandal, a resident of Basanti in South 24 Parganas.
The incident took place close to the New Bridge area in Salt Lake, where a private car, that reportedly collided with several vehicles, crashed into Mondal’s motorcycle from behind. The force of the impact made the two-wheeled vehicle burst into flames and Mondal was trapped – unable to escape.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the police made no proper attempt to rescue him as he remained entangled between railings before the flames engulfed him entirely.

His family alleged the car’s registration number was very visible and the driver was not found after more than 12 hours of colliding with Mondal's motorcycle.
Family members also stated that they tried filing a complaint at the Police station, but were denied entry and forcibly rejected. They alleged that the police station later wrote up the complaint and made a family member with no education sign without reading.
The family also claimed that the police and fire department arrived late to the site of the incident. The incident triggered local backlash in Salt Lake and portions of North 24 Parganas. The police claimed to have fired tear gas shells to disperse the scene from escalating.
Bidhannagar police stated that a case was opened against the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and assault to a police personnel.
"There are no arrests as of now and the investigation is on," a senior officer said, adding that forensic was eventually coming to visit the site.
