Bengaluru: In an attempt to reduce the surging traffic issues in the city, an expert committee in alliance with the Karnataka government has proposed to levy a congestion tax.
As per the proposition mentioned in a report titled, “Karnataka’s Decade – Roadmap to a $1 Trillion Economy,” there will be a congestion charge imposed on all non-exempt vehicles that enter the city during rush hours.
The report underscores that the intention of this measure is to facilitate travel times for buses, cars, and delivery vehicles. Furthermore, spread awareness among the commuters about the impact of traffic congestion during peak hours.
Here are the nine potential entry points for congestion tax:

2. Bellari Road
3. Mysore Road
4. Magadi Road
5. Bannerghatta Road
6. Kanakapura Road
7. Old Airport Road
8. Old Madras Road
9. Hosur Road
There are about 12 million vehicles entering Bengaluru daily. With the imposition of congestion charge, the city is anticipating to generate a substantial amount of revenue. The report further stated that the revenue could be utilised to reinvest in enhancing the transport structure of the city.
In order to collect congestion charges, the authorities are planning on using the FASTag system, which has been functional in Silicon Valley since 2021. The authorities believe this system would make the process seamless and convenient for the commuters, facilitating the scheme’s acceptance and success.
Speaking of, on September 27, Bengaluru faced massive traffic. The worst-hit area in the city was the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The people outcried for being stuck there for about five hours. Some people shared their terrible experience of being stuck in a jam while they were on their way to their office or back home on X. Consequently, they advised others not to leave the office before 9 pm or avoid using the ORR, Marathahalli, Sarjapura and Silkboard routes.
