It seems for the BJP leadership whatever they are saying in retort to Congress leaders, and or even a well-meaning issue on milk cooperatives, they are boomeranging in the election season in Karnataka. Or in other words, Congress is managing to turn even an innocuous and pragmatic move of the government into a potential poll issue that is damaging the BJP in some way.
Take for example a statement of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, who is also the Union Minister for Cooperatives, that Amul and Nandini should be cooperating more sparking off fears of an Amul takeover of the local Karnataka Milk Federation brand. Within hours, a Twitter war broke out with Kannada activists opposing the move weaving sub-nationalism into the whole affair and painting the BJP as an anti-Karnataka entity.
To be fair, the BJP has since backtracked and given clarifications on the move and even Amul has withdrawn quietly from its earlier stance, but Congress has managed to pick up the issue and run with it. All the Congress’s big guns gave wind to the campaign and used it effectively to paint the BJP into a party that was against the Karnataka farmers, who have gained immensely from the milk trade.
For sure, the Nandini versus Amul issue has caught the public imagination in the rural areas where the farmers resonate with it. Without having to do anything, Congress has got a stick to beat the BJP with and it is unable to do anything much about it.
The Congress, which usually and always was a laggard in the media management and perception-building game, has for once appears to have turned the tables on the BJP, at least in this Karnataka Assembly Polls, so far that is.
Former Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah’s calculated tweet seeking help on behalf of Indians caught up in Sudan that is in the midst of a civil war attracted a response from the external affairs minister S Jaishankar that has given fresh ammunition to the Congress to paint him as a villain.

Jaishankar’s response to Siddaramaiah who had sought help from the external affairs minister that the Congress leader was doing politics over people who were stuck in a war-like situation. His wordings in the tweet, “Simply appalled at your tweet! There
are lives at stake; don’t do politics. Since the fighting started on April 14th, the Embassy of India in Khartoum has been continuously in touch with most Indian Nationals and PIOs in Sudan,” drew a sharper response from the Congress leaders and people on Twitter.
The response of the External Affairs Minister Twitteratti questioning him since when asking for help became political and how was it appalling at all.
In fact, the response of Siddaramaiah was even more telling. He tweeted back, tagging the external affairs minister, “Since you are the External Affairs Minister, Dr SJaishankar, I have appeared you for help. If you are busy getting appalled, please point us to the person who can help us bring our people back. It is reported that 31 people from Karnataka belonging to the Hakki Pikki tribe are stranded in Sudan which is troubled by civil war. I urge @PMOIndia, @narendramodi, @HMOIndia, @MEAIndia, @BSBommai to hereby intervene and ensure their safe return.”
The Congress is leaving no stone unturned in reaching this message to the masses as to the response of the external affairs minister with its leaders asking workers to spread this far and wide.
