A 25-year-old woman died after falling from the ninth floor of a building in Hyderabad on the intervening night of 25 and 26, said police, adding that the woman came to the city for a surrogacy. The deceased has been identified as Ashwitha Singh, who hailed from Odisha. The incident took place at My Home Bhooja society in Hyderabad.
Police said a 54-year-old businessman brought Ashwitha, who charged Rs 10 lakh, for surrogacy. It was revealed that Ashwitha was unhappy with Rajesh’s behavior, leading her to attempt an escape.
“It was suspected that the incident took place in a bid to escape. The body was sent for a postmortem,” said a senior police officer.

Ashwitha’s husband accused that the businessman sexually harassed his wife, suggesting that this harassment may have driven her to take her own life. Police are investigating the allegations made by the deceased’s husband and registered a case of abetment of suicide against Rajesh Babu.
For the past month, Ashwitha had been staying in a room at the businessman’s apartment, while her husband occupied a separate room. Rajesh Babu, who lives in the same flat with his wife and family, was set to begin the surrogacy procedure next month.
When police arrived at the spot, it was found saris tied to an iron grill on the balcony of Ashwitha’s room, extending from the ninth floor to the seventh. Cops are suspecting that she tried to escape when the incident took place. However, police are investigating the case from all angles and further investigation is underway.
