Hyderabad: A 27-year-old software professional committed suicide in Kokapet on Friday, TOI reported. Ganiwada Naga Prabhakar was unable to overcome mounting debts and was addicted to online betting, police told TOI. It was further revealed that Prabhakar had been working for a customer service firm for the past two years.

Born in West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, Prabhakar was living in Hyderabad and was staying in a PG in Gachibowli. Both his workplace and PG facility, where he committed suicide, are in the Kokapet locality. Deccan Chronicle said police reported that Prabhakar returned to his hostel room at Kokapet, and jumped from the seventh floor of the building. He sustained serious injuries and died on the spot. His body was subsequently shifted to Osmania Hospital for postmortem.

There was an effort by Prabhakar’s family, particularly his father, Bhadra Rao, in trying to bail him out by repaying some of them. Nonetheless, young professional’s financial challenges continued which created additional stress and concern. His sister Durga Bhavani stated that he has been stressed by his loans, which had been increasing due to his continued investment in online betting.

Police investigations also showed that Prabhakar had taken loans from multiple sources, including friends and acquaintances, to fund his betting pursuits. Despite his father’s efforts to alleviate his financial burden, Prabhakar struggled with the remaining debt, which likely contributed to his emotional and psychological distress. His family members recounted his growing anxiety over his financial situation, which police believe may have ultimately led him to take this tragic step.

One of the many things still unclear is the fact that there is no suicide note left behind; however, given that there are many issues that may still be unclear to the general public, the authorities are not limiting their investigations to his financial situation and his last interactions. An FIR has been lodged based on the complaint received by Prabhakar’s sister and the police are tracing the borrowers and the money lenders.

This real life story is a pointer towards uncontrolled online betting and its devastating effects fiscally and psychologically amongst young professionals. It brings out the need to educate people and offer support to those who are indebted and betting addicts as well as closer regulation of online betting platforms that lure individuals into a cycle of debt and distress.
