Hyderabad: One Dead, Ten Fall Sick After Eating Momos; Food Safety Officials Raid Outlet

A show-cause notice was issued to the Food Business Operator (FBO) to suspend its operations immediately. Officials also informed that the vendor will be facing a criminal case under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS), 2006.

Hyderabad food safety officials raided a Momos outlet in Khairatabad on Sunday. The raid followed complaints of health complications caused due to the consumption of momos. A woman died and ten others fell sick allegedly due to food poisoning after eating momos from a street stall, police said. It was found that the victims ate momos from different places but made by the same vendor within the police station limits at Banjara Hills last week. An investigation has been launched into the matter by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Violations Observed During Inspection

The police department assisted the food safety officials in locating the address of the vendor. According to the Commissioner of Food Safety, Hyderabad, an inspection was conducted on October 28 at WOW Hot Momos/Delhi Hot Momos at Chintal Basti, Khairatabad. Notably, many food safety violations were found.

The list includes:

  1. The establishment was operating without any FSSAI license or registration.
  2. Food was prepared in unhygienic conditions.
  3. The dough was placed directly in the refrigerator without any packaging.
  4. The Refrigerator door was broken. Dustbins were found placed open.
  5. Collected Samples were sent for lab analysis.
