In a harrowing incident, a self-styled godman, identified as Vinod Kashyap, has been apprehended in connection with two cases of sexual assault reported at Dwarka North police station. The 33-year-old accused had been operating an establishment named ‘Mata Masani Chowki Darbar’ in the Kakrola area and also maintains a popular YouTube channel.
In both incidents, it is alleged that Kashyap lured devotees by offering assistance with their problems and insisted on performing “guru seva.” However, when women approached his darbar seeking help, he subjected them to sexual assault and issued threats to dissuade them from reporting the incidents to the authorities.
The police have filed two cases against the accused under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and subsequently arrested him. The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.
Incidents of similar nature have also occurred in the past. A self-proclaimed spiritual guru, Asaram Bapu was apprehended earlier this year. His life imprisonment was prompted by the charges of rape and sodomy.
A woman based in Surat had accused Asaram of committing multiple instances of rape while she stayed at his ashram in Motera, Ahmedabad, approximately a decade ago.
This marks Asaram Bapu’s second conviction and imprisonment in a sexual assault case. He is already serving time in Jodhpur prison after being found guilty in a separate sexual assault case by a Rajasthan court in 2018.
In 2013, following Asaram Bapu’s arrest in the Rajasthan rape case, two women from Surat came forward with accusations of sexual exploitation against the self-proclaimed godman and his son, Narayan Sai.
The older sister alleged that Asaram had sexually assaulted her between 1997 and 2006 during her stay at his Ahmedabad ashram.
The younger sister accused Narayan Sai of sexual assault while she was residing at Asaram’s ashram in the Jahangirpura area of Surat from 2002 to 2005.
