New Delhi: In a welcome move Delhi government agreed to pay a share of Rs 415 crore to the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors of Alwar and Panipat. The Supreme Court gives two months to submit Rs 415 crore for the project.
The RRTS project aims to create semi-high-speed rail corridors connecting Delhi to Meerut, Alwar, and Panipat, which will significantly improve regional connectivity and transportation efficiency. However, the Delhi government has been hesitant to financially support the infrastructure development for the last two segments, despite already spending a substantial Rs 1,100 crore on advertisements in the past three years. This led to the intervention of the court to address the matter.
The responsibility for the RRTS project lies with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a collaborative initiative involving the central government and the concerned states. The construction of the Delhi-Meerut stretch is already underway, but the Delhi government has expressed reluctance in sharing the financial burden for the remaining segments, citing budgetary constraints.
The court had previously urged the Delhi government to disclose the amount spent on advertisements during the past three financial years. In response to the government’s request for making contributions in instalments, the court emphasized the need for prompt payment, stressing the importance of participating in crucial infrastructure projects.
The RRTS corridor is a vital investment estimated at Rs 31,632 crore, and it will significantly enhance transportation between Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana. The court’s intervention serves as a reminder of the significance of collaboration and timely financial commitments for the improvement of the region’s transportation network as the project continues to progress.
