Delhi’s Air Quality Plummets: Hazardous Conditions Persist, AQI Reaches 505

The air quality in Delhi continues to deteriorate as winter progresses, with today's conditions reaching alarming levels.

The air quality in Delhi continues to deteriorate as winter progresses, with today’s conditions reaching alarming levels. A dense, black smog has shrouded Delhi since morning, contributing to hazardous air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) today stands at 505. Specific area readings are recorded at 411 in Anand Vihar, 443 in Wazirpur, 422 in RK Puram, and 432 in Alipore.

The board highlights that the current pollution levels pose significant health risks to residents, potentially leading to respiratory issues and eye-related problems such as redness and itching. Despite expert predictions of an improvement in air quality over the next 2-3 days, the Environment Minister has affirmed the continuation of vehicle bans under GRP-3 rules for vehicles entering Delhi-NCR.

The morning forecast suggests the possibility of light fog. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)’s forecast, Delhi’s pollution is anticipated to persist in the ‘very poor’ category for the next six days. Weather predictions indicate calm surface winds in the morning, likely originating from north-west or north-east directions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the maximum and minimum temperatures will remain consistent over the upcoming days, potentially resulting in morning fog.

While GRAP-4 restrictions were lifted by the Central Government on Monday, bans under GRAP-3 will persist. GRAP-4 initially restricted construction activities and the entry of trucks and commercial four-wheelers into Delhi-NCR, which has now been lifted. However, Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, has announced the continuation of bans on outdoor sports activities and prayer meetings. Schools are advised to enforce the use of masks among students, and both parents and children should adopt preventive measures while commuting to school to minimize exposure to air pollution.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
