New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the day as well after Delhi witnessed 37.1 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. While keeping in mind the weather conditions, traffic disruptions are likely in Delhi.
IMD website said, “Major traffic disruption might occur on roads. There might be water accumulation in low-lying areas and on roads.”
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, advising residents in most parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region to stay informed about the severe weather conditions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms are anticipated in isolated areas.
An IMD official reported that the heavy rainfall experienced from 05:30 to 08:30 am in Delhi was a result of intense convection passing through the region.
During the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am, the Safdarjung weather station, which is representative of Delhi’s weather, recorded 37.1 mm of rainfall.
On the 8th of July, Delhi received the highest amount of rainfall in 21 years, with 126.1 mm of rain recorded between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. This extreme rainfall led to chaos on the streets and exposed the city’s lack of preparedness to handle the monsoon.
On July 12, low-lying neighbourhoods in Delhi were inundated, leading to evacuations as the water level in the Yamuna River breached a 45-year-old record, reaching 208.08 meters. This surpassed the previous record of 207.49 meters set on September 6, 1978.
