When the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was nowhere on the national capital’s political map, senior veteran leaders like Vijay Kumar Malhotra emerged as key architects in establishing the party’s presence in Delhi. As Malhotra (93), the first president of the BJP’s Delhi unit, breathed his last Tuesday morning at AIIMS Delhi, his contributions in strengthening the Party were evoked once more.
A day before his tragic passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered his parliamentary interventions. Speaking at the newly-built BJP Delhi office’s inauguration on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, PM Modi recalled how VK Malhotra, Lal Krishna Advani, and other Jan Sangh stalwarts gave voice to the people when the Metropolitan Council was formed. The Prime Minister said that Jan Sangh leaders stood with the citizens of Delhi resisting government oppression during the Emergency.
Who Was Vijay Kumar Malhotra?
Vijay Kumar Malhotra, aged 93, was among the BJP and its predecessor Jan Sangh’s most prominent faces. He had served as a five-time Member of Parliament and two-time MLA from Delhi. A defining moment of the senior veteran leader’s political career was his victory in the Lok Sabha elections in 1999, when he defeated the Late former PM Manmohan Singh by a high margin.

In a social media post on Tuesday, PM Modi condoled the veteran BJP leader’s demise. “Shri Vijay Kumar Malhotra Ji distinguished himself as an outstanding leader, who had a very good understanding of people’s issues. He played a vital role in strengthening our Party in Delhi. He is also remembered for his Parliamentary interventions. Pained by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” he said.
