In a very shocking incident, Delhi clubs fake activity to lure high paying customers was busted. On Saturday, the Special Task Force of Delhi Police received information about a gang using dating apps to scam people at a bar inside a mall in East Delhi and arrested four people. After hours of questioning, the accused admitted to setting up fake women profiles on dating apps to lure victims.
Modus Operandi
According to the police, the scam begins with the creation of fake profiles on various dating apps. Posing as women, the fraudsters initiate conversations with strangers and eventually invite them on dates to an expensive club. The police suspect that this scheme was part of a larger fraud operation designed to trap individuals into paying exorbitant bills at clubs in Delhi, officials said on Monday.
The fraud was uncovered with the arrest of four men who were allegedly roped in by a club to draw in and dupe high-paying customers. The accused have been identified as Rajender, 30; Kuldeep, 39; Ashish, 21; and Deepak, 24. The accused received a commission of Rs 3,000 per night to get the victims to agree to come to these clubs, police said.
What The Police Says
According to the police, once at the club, the woman would encourage the victim—lured through the dating app—to order expensive drinks and food. “The accused then colluded with the club management to generate inflated bills, forcing the victims to pay exorbitant amounts,” said DCP (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam.
The police had been tracking the group orchestrating these fake dates for months. “Officially, no victims came forward to file complaints, but there were reports of people being scammed through dating apps,” a police official stated.
The breakthrough came when an informer tipped off SI Ajay Tomar of the Special Task Force, Shahdara, about the accused being hired by a club in Karkardooma.
The informer pointed towards the four men standing outside the entry gate of the club, on the ground floor of a mall. However, the accused were arrested on the spot, and their mobile phones were seized.
