New Delhi: As the highly anticipated G20 summit approaches, the Delhi government has issued a crucial gazette notification outlining extensive traffic restrictions to ensure the event’s smooth execution. These restrictions, slated to be in effect from September 8 to September 10, will significantly impact the city’s roads and vehicular movement.
Traffic restrictions unveiled
The recently issued gazette notification provides a comprehensive breakdown of the traffic restrictions set to be imposed during the G20 summit. It specifies that several categories of vehicles, including goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, inter-state buses, and local city buses like those operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS), will face stringent limitations.
Restricted zones
During the period spanning from the night of September 7 to September 10, these vehicles shall not be allowed to operate on key routes such as Mathura Road (beyond the Ashram chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road, and within the Pragati Maidan tunnel. Furthermore, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), medium goods vehicles (MGVs), and light goods vehicles (LGVs) are barred from entering Delhi altogether from September 7 at 21:00 hours to September 10 at 23:59 hours.
Exemptions for essential services
The notification, however, carves out exemptions for vehicles carrying essential commodities like milk, vegetables, fruits, and medical supplies. Such vehicles, equipped with valid “no-entry permissions,” will still be allowed entry into Delhi.
Controlled Zone-I
The heart of New Delhi, the New Delhi district, is designated as “Controlled Zone-I” from September 8 to September 10. During this period, access to key areas like C-Hexagon, India Gate, and surrounding roads will be limited. Only residents, authorized vehicles, and those involved in essential services for hotels, hospitals, and crucial installations within the district will have permission to traverse these roads.
Taxi and TSR restrictions
The gazette notification further enforces a ban on TSRs (three-wheeler scooter rickshaws) and taxis from entering or plying within New Delhi district between 09.09.2023 at 05:00 hours and 10.09.2023 at 23:59 hours. However, commercial vehicles, including buses already present in Delhi, will be permitted to operate on the Ring Road and the network of roads extending beyond it, leading to the city’s borders.
Exemptions for tourists and bona fide residents
A provision has been made for taxis carrying bona fide residents and tourists with valid bookings in hotels located within New Delhi district. These taxis will be granted access to the road network within the district, facilitating their travel to the New Delhi railway station.
With these stringent traffic restrictions in place, Delhiites and visitors alike are urged to plan their journeys carefully during the G20 summit to avoid disruptions and ensure compliance with the outlined regulations.
