Watch Live!
Okhla continues to be a crucial battleground in Delhi’s political landscape, with fierce competition among AAP, BJP, Congress, and AIMIM. Incumbent MLA Amanatullah Khan (AAP) faces tough challenges from BJP’s Manish Chaudhary, Congress’ Ariba Khan, and AIMIM’s Shifa Ur Rehman Khan, making the contest one to watch closely.
The Fierce Battle in Okhla
The electoral stage at Okhla has become a melting pot of fierce competition this time around. The constituency, known for its vibrant electoral battles over the years, is once again a spotlight as major political entities vie for supremacy. The Congress was working hard for a comeback in Okhla, while for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), it was imperative to keep their fortress unbreached. BJP, not to be left behind in this race, fielded a strong candidate who could sway voters in their favor. Adding to this intriguing mix was the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), which intensified the election fervor by fielding a controversial candidate.
A Peek into Okhla’s Past
Once hailed as a bastion for the Congress party, Okhla had a long-standing history of loyalty since the inception of the Delhi Assembly in 1993. For a span stretching from 1993 to 2008, it was Parvez Hashmi from Congress who kept the constituency under his leadership. In the subsequent years of 2009 to 2013, Asif Mohammad Khan continued the Congress dominance. However, this changed drastically in 2015 when the AAP’s candidate Amanatullah Khan secured a victory and since then, he has retained his seat, making him a pivotal figure in the constituency.
Who’s in the Race from Okhla?
This year, the AAP placed its bets yet again on the tested political acumen of Amanatullah Khan, hoping for a third consecutive term with him. Meanwhile, the Congress party brought forth Ariba Khan, a promising figure with the hopes of reclaiming past glory. BJP, asserting its presence, put forth Manish Chaudhary as their contender. In a surprise move, AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi chose Shifaur Rahman as their candidate, even though he’s currently serving a sentence related to the Delhi riots controversy. Owaisi himself was vociferously campaigning for Rahman, adding a whirlwind of discussion and debate to the Okhla contest.
As the day progresses and votes are counted, all eyes will be on Okhla to see whether the tradition continues with AAP, or if there’s a new chapter in the making for the Congress, or perhaps even a surprising upset by BJP or AIMIM. The city’s political landscape stands at a precipice of potential transformation, as these results are anticipated to be reflective of the larger political sentiment in Delhi. Stay tuned as we bring you the live updates and witness every twist and turn in this captivating electoral saga at Okhla!
