Ghaziabad: In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the community in shock, a 14-year-old boy from Ghaziabad met a tragic end due to rabies, all stemming from a dog bite he hid from his family for over a month. The distressing episode sheds light on the importance of prompt medical attention in such cases.

A cryptic dog bite

The teenager, identified as Sabez, had a fateful encounter with a dog in his locality. It is alleged that one of the five to six dogs residing in his neighborhood, which are cared for by a local woman, bit him. This incident of dog bites was not isolated, as the dogs had reportedly bitten others in the past.

The ominous silence

Out of fear and perhaps unaware of the gravity of the situation, Sabez chose to keep the dog bite a secret from his family. It was only when he started experiencing the initial symptoms of rabies four days later that his family began to piece together the puzzle.

Tragic symptoms unfold

Sabez’s condition took a harrowing turn as he developed a paralyzing fear of wind and water. He withdrew into darkness, becoming increasingly scared and exhibiting erratic behavior, which deeply concerned his family.

Desperate search for help

In a race against time, Sabez was rushed to several hospitals, including those in Ghaziabad, Meerut, and even Delhi’s prestigious AIIMS. The family’s desperate efforts to seek treatment took them to Bulandshahr, where the tragedy unfolded. Sabez lost his life while returning from Bulandshahr alongside his father, Yakub.

Family’s plea for action

In the wake of this devastating incident, Sabez’s grief-stricken family has called for action and implored the local administration and authorities to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Ghaziabad municipal corporation’s notice

Reacting to the incident, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation issued a notice to the woman who tended to the dogs, expressing concerns about their unauthorized presence and incessant barking. The notice inquired whether the dogs were registered and vaccinated, emphasizing the mandatory registration and vaccination under its purview.

A matter of compliance

The woman has been given a three-day ultimatum to furnish the registration details of the dogs; failure to comply would result in a fine of Rs 5,000.

The tragic tale of Sabez underscores the critical importance of transparent communication, especially concerning incidents that could have severe health implications. It serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with dog bites and the need for immediate medical attention to prevent devastating outcomes.
