NOIDA stands for “New Okhla Industrial Development Authority.” Over the years, it has emerged as a planned, integrated, and modern industrial city, well-connected to India’s capital, Delhi, through a well-established network of roads and metro services. The city came into administrative existence in 1976.
Noida was established to support emerging urbanization during the Emergency period (1975–1977). It was created under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act, 1976, as part of a new initiative led by Sanjay Gandhi.
Noida boasts the highest per capita income in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) and is classified as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). According to records, the Noida Authority is among the richest development authorities in the country.
Noida as the Electronics Hub of Uttar Pradesh
Noida is also recognized as the electronics hub of Uttar Pradesh, attracting numerous companies and job seekers every year. Additionally, the riverside Okhla Bird Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of migratory and native bird species. The sanctuary also features beautifully maintained gardens with water lilies and cacti.
Furthermore, the ISKCON temple in Noida showcases a detailed diorama depicting the life of Lord Krishna. The city’s rapidly progressing economy has contributed significantly to its growth, leading to overcrowding and a rising demand for both residential and commercial spaces.
Upcoming Initiatives
The Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is scheduled to begin commercial operations in mid-2025. According to media reports, it will be a greenfield airport designed to enhance connectivity for Delhi NCR, Noida, and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Over the years, Noida has grown seamlessly to accommodate urban migration from across the country. Developments like the construction of the Delhi–Noida Direct (DND) Flyway in 2001 have further boosted the city’s accessibility and infrastructure.
