Delhi Weather Update: IMD Issues Red Alert! Rain, Thunderstorm And Gusty Winds Hit Capital; Flight Operations Affected

Due to bad weather in Delhi-NCR, some flights at Delhi airport are either delayed or likely to be cancelled. Airlines have issued advisory to passengers to check flight status. Several areas in Delhi have reported water-logging.

Rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds lashed the national capital on Friday morning. This shift in weather has brought relief to residents from the scorching heat.  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for rain and thunderstorms. According to the IMD, severe weather conditions are currently underway in the region due to presence of heavy cloud mass. Winds with speeds of 70-80 km/h are expected during the morning hours, while moderate to heavy rain and dust storms have been predicted for the day. There has been an appreciable drop in maximum temperatures over the past few days. The Maximum temperature is currently in the range of 37 to 39°celsius. There will be no large change in maximum temperatures during the next 2 days over Delhi, stated the IMD in its bulletin.

The sudden weather change has been caused by the influence of several weather systems. These include a fresh Western disturbances, upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan, and a north-south trough from above upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan and neighbourhood. The western disturbance is set to impact others parts of the country also, including states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and others.

IMD Issues Alert!

Furthermore, the IMD has issued a weather alert along with details of possible impact and actions to be taken during such situations. In an X post, the Met Department informed that Moderate to intense spell has been reported over Delhi and it is likely to continue at many places of Delhi-NCR.

“02/05/2025: 05:15 IST; Moderate to intense spells of  rainfall accompanied with moderate to severe thunderstorm and lightning (40-90 Km/h gusty winds) is very likely to continue at many places of Delhi and NCR, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Safidon, Panipat, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal (Haryana) Gangoh, Shamli, Kandhla, Nandgaon, Barsana, Raya, Hathras, Mathura, Sadabad, Agra, Jajau (U.P.) Bhiwari, Deeg, Bharatpur (Rajasthan) during next 2 hours. @moesgoi @ndmaindia @airnewsalerts @DDNewslive,” wrote IMD on X.

Flight Ops Affected

Moreover, severe thunder lightning and squally winds with speed of 70-80 kmph is likely to occur over Delhi during next 2 hours.

While intense weather conditions will be experienced on Friday, May 2, here’s a look at how the weather will be in the coming days.

According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorm and rain have been predicted on May 3, 5 and 6. Cloudy sky has been forecast until May 7 with possibility of light rain/ drizzle. Gusty winds will prevail over Delhi on remainder days of the week. The maximum temperature is expected to remain in the range of 37-39 degrees Celsius. No heatwave condition has been predicted by the IMD. The forecast, therefore indicates a brief period of relief from the heat, with pleasant weather conditions in the national capital.
