Delhi woke up to light rain lashing parts of the national capital amid a cold wave. The air quality saw a significant improvement and was recorded in ‘very poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The AQI touched 369 at 6am on Friday. There has been some relief for Delhiites after Air Quality Index (AQI) plummeted to ‘very poor’ category after reeling under ‘severe’ category for a week.

The Central government’s air quality monitoring panel on Tuesday revoked Stage IV (‘Severe+’) measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) following an improvement in air quality. What Led To Improvement In AQI From ‘Severe’ To ‘Very Poor’?
The improvement in air quality has been attributed to better weather conditions, including stronger winds, according to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
However, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced on December 24, that actions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III will continue to remain in effect to prevent any further deterioration of air quality.
Will Rain Bring Respite?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain accompanied with thunderstorm in the national capital today. It has issued yellow alert for thunderstorm and lightning. The maximum and minimum temperatures will remain 20 and 12 degrees Celsius respectively. Experts have predicted that light showers will provide temporary relief from the city’s ongoing pollution by settling dust particles and slightly improving air quality.
