‘Patakhe Wali’ Diwali: With Diwali 2025 just days away, Delhiites are buzzing about whether they can use the festival crackers this time, as the Supreme Court had already made it clear on how to celebrate Diwali with crackers. The top court had also on Friday reserved its verdict on whether to ease the complete ban on firecrackers in the Delhi–National Capital Region during Diwali. Now the people in Delhi-NCR are in confusion about whether they can burst firecrackers or should they go for green crackers. The Apex Court of India has been tweaking its firecracker rules year after year. Here’s what you can do to celebrate the grand festival in compliance with SC.
What the Supreme Court said about bursting crackers on Diwali
On October 10, 2025, a bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran verbally greenlit a trial relaxation: sale and bursting of only green firecrackers will be allowed for these five Diwali days, but strictly between 8 PM and 10 PM each evening. The new shift from the blanket ban imposed on April 2025. The bench noted, “For the time being, we will allow it during the five days of Diwali on a trial basis…However, we will confine it to certain time limits”.
The court’s comment came after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, shared a detailed plan to control firecracker sales. Only licensed traders would be allowed to sell firecrackers, and online platforms like Flipkart and Amazon would not be able to sell them in Delhi-NCR. Traditional firecrackers will continue to be banned. The government said the relaxation in rules should apply to all festivals.

Yes, you can burst, but only green ones, 8-10 PM, in open spaces—not balconies or indoors. Only licensed shops can start their sales. No Amazon/Flipkart deliveries in NCR. Traditional “patakhas” (full of barium nitrate and heavy metals) are out.
In Delhi-NCR for Diwali 2025, you can burst only green firecrackers during a 2-hour window (8 PM to 10 PM) on these five days.
