A clash broke out between two groups of students at Jamia Millia Islamia campus on Tuesday night during Diwali celebrations. The clash erupted after a rangoli event which was held as part of Diwali celebration in campus. A video has surfaced online where a group of students can be heard chanting slogans, and in other clips students have claimed that ‘Palestine Zindabad’ was chanted by other group of students disrupting the ongoing Diwali celebrations. The authenticity of the claims have not been verified so far.
As per reports, the incident occurred during Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) annual Diwali celebration program at JMI. And the brawl started after some students from a group allegedly started to ruin the rangolis prepared by students. This led to the scuffle between two groups. As per reports of Indian Express, students even kicked off diyas with their feet. The incident was reported from Gate number 7 of the University.
What Did The Police Say?
The Indian Express quoted DCP Southeast, Ravi Kumar Singh who said that the incident took place around 7:30-8pm near gate 7. He added, “A group of students affiliated with the ABVP were putting up diyas and making rangolis for Diwali, which displeased another group of students. The other group wrecked the decorations, which led to a scuffle. Both sides engaged in sloganeering.”
It was informed that the police were deployed to maintain the peace and security and were stationed at campus as a precautionary measure. Students were ordered to disperse and the crowd left by 9 pm, said Ravi.
The videos that have surfaced online shows crowd of students at campus and they can be seen sloganeering. Some students can be seen arguing with each other.

JMI has not released any official statement on this incident. However, The Indian Express reported the statement of JMI unit of the Student Federation of India on Tuesday, who claimed that ABVP, under the guise of Diwali celebrations, unleashed an attack on students.
