Gurugram: The aftermath of yesterday’s 18-hour communal clash in Nuh, Haryana, which resulted in five fatalities and left over 70 people injured, has reached Sector 70 in Gurugram.

On Tuesday evening, a shop and shanties adjacent to a residential complex were set on fire.

Gurgaon ACP Crime Varun Kumar Dahiya urged people to contact helpline no. 112 in case of any violence and warned against believing rumors. He assured that vehicular movement is not restricted, and the internet is functioning.

Earlier today, rioting occurred in Badshahpur, located 50 km from Nuh. A mob of approximately 200 people armed with sticks and stones vandalized several shops, including meat shops, and set fire to an eatery while chanting religious slogans. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The violence originally broke out during a religious procession in Nuh, situated just 50 km from Delhi, following the circulation of an objectionable viral video. As the mob attacked the procession with stones, over 2,500 participants sought refuge in a temple.

The situation escalated as the evening progressed, with a mosque being set on fire post-midnight, and mobs went on a rampage in Nuh and neighboring Gurugram, torching and vandalizing over a hundred vehicles. The deceased include two security personnel and two civilians, one of whom was a mosque cleric.

The people who had sought shelter in the temple were rescued close to midnight. The administration has registered 44 FIRs, resulting in the arrest of over 70 individuals so far.

The violence erupted following rumors that Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal activist wanted for the murder of two men from Bharatpur, was present at the rally. Monu Manesar, who has been on the run since February, urged people through a video to join the religious procession, claiming that he would also attend it. His associates allegedly made provocative speeches before the rally.

Chaudhary Aftab, MLA from Nuh, expressed that people were already angered by the statements of Monu Manesar and Bittu Bajrangi, and rumors of Monu’s presence in Manesar further fueled the violence.

In response to the situation, all educational institutions in Gurugram remained closed, and board exams for Classes 10 and 12 were postponed. Tomorrow, educational institutions in Gurgaon’s Sohna sub-division will also remain closed.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar assured “strict action” against the culprits, labeling the incident as unfortunate and urging people to maintain peace in the state.
