18 people lost their lives when a large number of passengers rushed suddenly, causing a stampede. To prevent such accidents in the future, Indian Railways is setting up waiting areas for passengers.
After the deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, Indian Railways has decided to set up permanent waiting areas and use artificial intelligence to manage crowds, as per sources.
This decision came two days after 18 people, including nine women and five children, died in a stampede caused by a sudden rush of passengers trying to board trains for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
After learning from the deadly stampede and overcrowding at the station, Indian Railways plans to set up permanent waiting areas at about 60 stations across the country, said top railway sources to News18
These stations have been chosen because they see a large number of passengers during important events. Many stations are currently overcrowded because of the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
The government will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technology to manage crowds and handle emergencies, sources said. The Railways has planned a special campaign to find out the problems and prevent similar incidents in the future. This will involve getting feedback from passengers, coolies, and shopkeepers.
