Two women, standing together on stage right after winning university elections — Gupta and Lamba, are side by side in an old, blurry photo.
As the BJP announced Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s new Chief Minister on Thursday, Congress’s Alka Lamba started looking through an old photo album from 30 years ago.
The picture shows two women standing together on stage after their victory in university elections — Gupta and Lamba side by side in a blurry photo. “As soon as I heard that Rekha has been declared as the Chief Minister of Delhi, I went back to my student days. 30 years ago, we both took oath as the office bearers of the Delhi University Students’ Union,” Lamba, who lost to former Delhi CM and AAP’s Kalkaji MLA Atishi in the Assembly elections, said.
Sharing the photo on X, Lamba wrote, “This memorable picture from 1995 — when Rekha Gupta and I took oath together. NSUI won the post of President of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) and Rekha won the post of General Secretary from ABVP. Congratulations and best wishes to Rekha Gupta… Congratulations on becoming Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister. We the people of Delhi hope that ma Yamuna will be clean and our daughters will be safe.”
Remembering her college days as a student leader, Lamba said that while she and Gupta had different political views, they both worked together for women’s safety and security on campus. “I was a Gandhian and she was a staunch RSS supporter… We used to have ideological fights but we both were 20 years old and had to juggle both college and politics… and we had only one year,” she said.
“Back then, we did not have mobile phones or social media… When I heard her name, I took out my old album and searched for the pictures…” said Lamba.
