New Delhi: Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary claimed that he found his name missing from the voters’ list when he arrived at the polling booth to cast his vote for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections on Sunday.

The Delhi Congress president, who arrived at a polling booth in Dallupura to cast his vote, said, “My name is neither in the voter list nor in the deleted list. The officials are probing it. My wife has voted,” as reported by news agency ANI.

Polling for 250 wards began on Sunday at 8 am and will end at 5.30 pm. Over 1.45 crore people are eligible to vote in the civic elections and 1,349 candidates are in the fray.

In the 2017 municipal elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the AAP and the Congress, winning 181 of the 270 wards. This is the first municipal election in the national capital after the delimitation of wards.

The BJP, this time, has put full force for Delhi MCD elections. Top leaders including Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states and MPs campaigned door-to-door to garner public support.

The BJP held over 200 public meetings and roadshows with its senior leaders and chief ministers of the states ruled by the party. The BJP, which has ruled the civic body in Delhi since 2007, is looking to maintain its winning streak. At the same time, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has a majority in the assembly, is trying to make inroads in the first municipal elections in the capital.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) along with 50 other trade associations of Delhi have declared their support for BJP in the upcoming municipal polls.

According to data shared by the State Election Commission officials, the total number of voters in Delhi is 1,45,05,358 — 78,93,418 males, 66,10,879 females and 1,061 transgender persons.
