Delhi encountered its chilliest night of the season on Monday as the minimum temperature plummeted to 13.5 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below the normal average, at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station. However, the nighttime temperatures are expected to rise from Tuesday onward due to a shift in wind direction. In contrast, daytime temperatures are anticipated to dip below 30 degrees Celsius starting from November 11.

The alteration in wind direction played a significant role in this temperature shift. The winds, previously coming from the northwest, shifted to south-easterly on Monday. According to Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist and head at the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department, “As it is likely to remain variable for the next few days, the minimum temperature may rise.” During the winter season, north-westerly winds bring cold air from the Himalayan region, while south-easterly winds carry relatively warmer air.

On Monday, the maximum temperature reached 31.5 degrees Celsius, surpassing the normal average by one degree. The preceding day recorded a maximum temperature of 29.5 degrees Celsius.

The IMD forecast suggests that the maximum temperature should remain above 30 degrees Celsius until November 10. Nevertheless, after that date, strong north-westerly winds may lead to a drop in temperatures. “A western disturbance is impacting the Jammu and Kashmir region. When its influence subsides, we can expect north-westerly winds with a speed of up to 15 kmph from November 11, resulting in a decrease in the minimum temperature,” mentioned Srivastava.

The IMD predicts that on November 11, the maximum temperature might hover around 29 degrees Celsius and dip further to 28 degrees Celsius by November 12.

Historical data from the Meteorological Department indicates that, on average, the maximum temperature tends to dip below 25 degrees Celsius during November, while the minimum falls below 10 degrees Celsius in the latter half of the month. In the previous year, the lowest maximum temperature for the month was 25.4 degrees on November 18, with the lowest minimum temperature of 7.3 degrees recorded on November 29.

The weather forecast for Tuesday indicates clear skies with a maximum temperature likely to reach 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to be around 14 degrees Celsius. There’s also a possibility of light rain in some neighbouring NCR areas on the night of November 9 or during the early hours of November 10.
