New Delhi: The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently fined a live-in couple for seeking police protection in the lack of evident threat to their life and liberty. The court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the couple.

In a previous hearing, Justice Alok Jain had made it clear that the petitioners will have to pay a fine of upto Rs 50,000 if the state would determine that there is no threat on the life the couple, reported Bar and Bench.

Woman assaulted by parents, husband after revealing to parents 

The bench was hearing a case field by a married woman who was in a live-in relationship with an unmarried man who is the second petitioners in the plea filed by them. They alleged that they are insecure due to a threat of death.

The woman had initiated executed a live-in relationship deed on July 17 in Rajasthan where her matrimonial residence was. A represntation was also filed to the Supretendent of Police (SP) of Harayana’s Hisar.

As per the information, the woman said she revealed about her extra-marital affair to her parents who along with her husband, assaulted her and locked her in a room.

The woman alleged in front of the bench that she and her boyrfriend were facing a life-threatening situation that put their lives in jeopardy.

Couldn’t find evidence supporting threat on couple’s lives

After hearing all the sides and their arguments, the court noted that there are no such evidence that proove the couple was in threat and the allegations by them were made up.

“It is a strange thing that if in case petitioner No. 1 had run away from the matrimonial home a week ago, then why did she go back to Rajasthan to execute the live-in-relationship deed,” said the bench, reported Bar and Bench.

The apex court noted that there is no perception of threat to the petitioners appearing in the report of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Hisar. The court allowed the couple to take back their plea and charged them of a hefty fine that the petitioners will have to pay to the High Court Bar Association Lawyer’s Family Welfare Fund.
