Chandigarh: AAP MP Raghav Chadha has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding compensation for the loss caused to farmers due to unseasonal rains in Punjab. Chadha visited various farms in Punjab and interacted with farmers to take stock of the devastation caused by the heavy rains.
During the interaction, the farmers shared their grief with the MP and also gave him samples of their damaged crops and urged him to apprise the Union Finance Minister about their loss. Acting on their request, Chadha immediately wrote a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on the spot and sent it along with samples of the damaged wheat crop.
Chadha elaborated on the damage and told the finance minister that the rains affected at least 14 lakh hectares (40%) of the 34.9 lakh hectares of wheat sown in Punjab during the Rabi season, causing huge devastation to farmers. Appreciating the Punjab government’s response, he said, “Our Honorable Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has increased the relief amount for crop damage from Rs 12,000 per acre to Rs 15,000. Acting swiftly on the basis of initial sampling, the DFPD Additional steps have also been taken to help our farmers relax uniform specifications for procurement of wheat as mandatory by the Govt.

Making the central government realize the responsibility, Chadha said that the centre cannot shirk its responsibility towards the farmers of Punjab. Especially considering the fact that the state has made a huge contribution to the country’s food security. He urged the Finance Minister to consider providing a special package to Punjab so that farmers could be adequately compensated for their losses.
