In a landmark achievement, the Bengaluru Metro, for the first time, facilitated the transport of the city’s first-ever human organ. With this historic milestone, Namma Metro has become the second metro in India to help save lives by undertaking such an initiative. The move highlights the city’s growing commitment to groundbreaking innovations. The organ in question was a donated liver, which was transported to Sparsh Hospital from Vydehi Hospital via Metro on Friday evening.

The organ was initially transported from Vydehi Hospital via a 5.5-km-long ‘green corridor’ to the Whitefield Metro Station. From there, it was taken by a team of doctors and medical staff. The last coach of a regular service train was dedicated specifically for this mission, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)!

To cut down crucial travel time, Metro security teams were deployed to ensure an uninterrupted flow of movement at all stations. The doctors’ team departed from Whitefield around 8:42 pm with the organ. The metro covered a distance of 31 kilometres and over 30 stations along the Purple Line. Within 55 minutes, the train arrived at Rajarajeshwari nagar Metro Station at 9:48 p.m.

Another 2.5-km-long green corridor was created to transport the liver to Sparsh Hospital. The transplant surgery concluded at around 3 a.m., reports added. On January 18, 2025, the Hyderabad Metro Rail transported the heart of a 34-year-old, becoming the country’s first city to undertake such an initiative.
