Karnataka Bandh On March 22: Statewide Shutdown Over Language Row – What’s Open, What’s Not?

Karnataka will experience a statewide 12-hour bandh from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., called by pro-Kannada groups in response to linguistic tensions and recent incidents in Belagavi.

Following the assault incident between a couple and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver and conductor in Karnataka, Belagavi, a border district of Maharashtra, the pro-Kannada organisation has called for a “statewide bandh” on March 22.

What Will Be Close:

Bus: It is yet to be clear that bus service will be affected, but some bus drivers have decided not to run buses. However, officials confirmation is awaited.

Private cabs And Autos: Private service may be affected as various organisations related to cabs and autos have stepped ahead to support Bandhi.

Education Institutes: Several schools have also issued preventive measures and announced holidays. Parents and students are advised to cross-check with their school and colleges.

Retail Shops: Many markets, shopping malls, and local retailers in places like Chickpet, KR Market, and Gandhi Bazaar are likely to shut down.

Malls And Theatres: Malls, multiplexes, and entertainment facilities may also shut if the protests progress.

Government Offices: State government offices will be open, but the ability to get to work may be impacted due to transportation issues. 

What Remains Open:

Namma Metro: Metros will be functioning as normal, but commuting to the metro station via auto and cab may be impacted.

Railways And Airports: Trains and flights will likely operate on a normal schedule, but it is advisable to plan your travel ahead of time. 

Hospitals And Pharmacies: All health facilities are open, including hospitals and pharmacies.

Trade And Supermarkets: Fuel stations, milk booths and some supermarkets will remain open; however, smaller businesses may choose to shut down.   

Quick Commerce And Food Delivery: delivery service companies like Blinkit, Zepto, or Instamart will continue normal operations. Also, food delivery services are in operation depending on whether the restaurant is open. 

Traffic and security protocols Bengaluru police will station extra personnel in sensitive areas such as Majestic, Town Hall, Mysore Bank Circle, and Freedom Park, where demonstrations are expected to occur. Commuters must keep an eye on traffic alerts and plan accordingly. 

KSRTC bus incident On February 22, a boy and girl on a KSRTC bus supposedly attacked the conductor and threatened the driver over a language issue. According to reports, the issue escalated when the conductor asked for a ticket and the boy answered in Marathi.

When the conductor replied to them that he didn’t understand Marathi and asked them to respond in Kannada, the boy supposedly called his friends, who subsequently attacked the conductor and driver. Five people were arrested in connection with the fight.
