BMRCL’s decision to raise metro ticket prices in Bengaluru is being opposed by students, who are asking for a discounted pass.
After BMRCL raised metro fares by 30%, students in Bengaluru are asking for monthly passes. They are worried about the higher cost of traveling on the metro and have asked BMRCL to offer discounted passes, similar to the BMTC student bus pass, to make their daily trips to school and college more affordable.
Bengaluru Metro Fair Hike: Impact On Students
With the metro becoming more expensive, students may need to spend between Rs 3,360 and Rs 4,320 per month if they travel more than 15km daily. This is a lot of money for many students who don’t have their own income and rely on their families. Some students are worried that this extra cost will put more pressure on their family’s finances.
The Bengaluru Metro Smart card holders get a discount of 5 Percent over the token price and an additional 5 per cent during non-peak hours.
BMTC Student Bus Pass: A More Affordable Option
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) provides discounted bus passes for students and free travel for women. Students can choose the bus service, which is a much cheaper option. Around 3.5 lakh students in Bengaluru use the concessional bus pass (for boys) and free travel for women under the Shakti Scheme.
