Bengaluru: Woman and Her Male Friends Publicly Assaulted After She Left Husband; Here’s What Police Did

A 38-year-old woman in Bengaluru was publicly assaulted by a group of men outside a mosque after her husband filed a complaint against her over a domestic dispute involving her male friends.

A woman and her male friend were allegedly assaulted in full public view after she separated from her husband following a dispute in Indiranagar Layout of Kanakapura near Bengaluru on Saturday. As the police came to know about the incident, they rushed to the spot and started an investigation.

According to police, the woman, who was married around 15 years ago, has recently separated from her husband and was in a relationship with a fisherman from a different community. On Friday, her relatives had tracked her down and found her at the man’s home. The next day, they confronted the couple in public.

The group of relatives assaulted both of them with slippers and then proceeded to partially shave their heads while other bystanders watched, police said adding the incident attracted the attention of local residents who notified the police.

A case has been registered and seven people have been identified as suspects. Five of the seven were arrested and charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials stated that the victims’ statements were recorded and they were also questioning family members, including women.

Both victims were taken to a hospital for treatment. Later, the woman was transferred to a rehabilitation center, where she is receiving counseling.

Police sent additional personnel into the locality to dissuade inciting violence. Police also organized a peace meeting with both families and community elders to restore order. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing.
