Bengaluru: Bengaluru metro fare hike implemented on February 9 met with severe backlash from commuters. In response to the backlash, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to revise the fare structure. As per the decision, reductions of up to 30 per cent will be implemented immediately.
BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao stated that the board reviewed feedback from public and decided to adjust fare hikes at points where increases were called excessive.
About Revised Fare Hike
Rao said, “We would just like to mention that there has been some basic feedback from the people. Both us and the board had a meeting yesterday and this morning as well, and we had a detailed discussion about the overall suggestions of the fare fixation committee. Based on these suggestions, the board has decided that they will be able to take some suggestions and make corrections for some of the prices which were jumping up abnormally in different points.”
The revision aims to provide relief to metro commuter with the adjusted fares.
Rao further stated that the reduction will be implemented immediately. He added, “We feel that up to 30 per cent reduction in the received fare revision would be there. It will be effective from today.”
BMRCL had earlier announced that it has decided to revise the fare structure which will be effective from February 9. The Corporation said that the maximum fare would be increased by around 50 per cent. The base far for the first 2 kilometres remained at Rs 10, while the maximum fare had been raised by 50%, increasing from Rs 60 to Rs 90. While the fares were revised, BMRCL said that it would retain the existing 5% discount on Smart cards only.
