For the unversed, the ‘Kannada Okkuta,’ a collective alliance of pro-Kannada groups, has announced a 12-hour bandh which will remain in force till 6 pm. In response to the statewide shutdown, Karnataka’s Mandya district has imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Meanwhile, the Bengaluru administration has opted to grant a day off for all educational institutions within the city. “Due to the Karnataka bandh announced by various organizations, a decision has been made to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges in Bengaluru city, keeping the well-being of students in mind”, stated Dayananda, Bengaluru city district deputy commissioner.

The longstanding Cauvery river water dispute between the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka has spanned several decades. Tensions escalated of late following a directive from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), instructing Karnataka to release 5000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for a duration of 15 days.

For the unversed, the Cauvery river originates in Karnataka’s Talakaveri region, traverses through Tamil Nadu, and eventually empties into the Bay of Bengal.
