Bengaluru Needs A Second Airport Soon; Kempegowda International Airport CEO Expresses Urgency

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport CEO believes that Bengaluru urgently needs another airport to handle this growing number of travellers.

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is on the verge of approaching its maximum capacity. It’s on track to host 92 million passengers each year by 2032-33. The airport’s CEO, Hari Marar, said that this year alone, Kempegowda International Airport will reach 40 million passengers. That’s a lot of people! And it’s happening much faster than it was anticipated, even before the first 30 years of its 30-plus-30-year plan are over.

Marar believes that Bengaluru urgently needs another airport to handle this growing number of travellers. He said that plans for a second airport should’ve started about two years ago to prevent the existing airport from getting overcrowded and not having connectivity.

While interacting with select media persons on the sidelines of the SOUL conference by FICCI, rotary, and the state of Israel at JW Mariott, Marar added that submission over this was made long ago. He further underscored that the identification of land should commence without further delay. Adding on, he addressed industrialists and expressed confidence that there will be a remarkable growth of 25% in aviation this year. He also highlighted an order of 1,100 planes worth $100 placed by big airlines like IndiGo and Air India.

As the airport is getting busier, it’s also becoming a bigger employer. Before Terminal 2 was built, Kempegowda International Airport had 25,000 employees. But after the new terminal opened, the workforce grew to 38,000. Marar thinks that this number will go up to 50,000 in the next two years because of all the new passengers and planes.
