Gurugram: A 34-year-old assistant professor filed a complaint against the Gurugram University dean for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. The complaint was filed at Sector 51 Women’s Police Station on April 28.
After an FIR has been registered the university had an internal meeting among 7-panel members to investigate the dean of the department. On Tuesday the announced that he has been removed from the post of dean, department chairperson and proctor, till the investigation is on.
According to the assistant professor the dean who was 50-year-old has been sexually harassing her since January. He yelled and flung insults at her when she was conducting a lesson on April 21, she claimed. On April 28, he allegedly summoned her to a clerk’s cabin on campus and yelled at her in front of two staff members.
The professor told, “After that, the clerks left and I was alone with him in the situation and started molesting me. I was scared and I started crying, but he blocked the door of the room and did not allow me to go outside. He also threatened that he would get me terminated from the job.”
The dean stated on Tuesday that the claims against him were “baseless” and that the professor had been “provoked by someone at the university conspiring against him.” He denied hurting her and said the memos were intended to address her workplace irresponsibility.
According to police, the accused has been charged under IPC sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation). SHO Suman of the Sector 51 police station also visited the university on Monday to conduct additional investigations and collect evidence such as CCTV footage.
SHO said, “We have taken the complainant’s statement as well.’
The registrar, Rajiv Singh said, “We ensure that such cases are taken care of in a transparent manner and as fast as possible. The university was shut down on Saturday when the assistant professor filed the complaint. We took immediate action on Monday and have been cooperating with police as well.”
