Optics for the BJP ahead of the Karnataka state Assembly elections are not flattering. On Wednesday, a leader who helped BJP defeat AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge in the last general elections, Baburao Chinchansur joined the Congress party in the presence of KPCC chief DK Shivakumar. If not anything, this movement of BJP leader to the Congress, just ahead of the announcement of the elections, boosts the opposition party that is showing energy and aggression in the campaigning.

Now the entry of a prominent Koli-Kabbaliga community leader into the Congress is a jolt to the BJP that was least expecting it. For the record, the BJP quit the BJP on Monday and was said to be heading for the Congress. It was a homecoming for him as he had quit the Congress in 2018 after his defeat in the elections and joined the BJP. He was also a former minister in the Siddaramaiah government earlier.

But after he joined the BJP, his role in the defeat of Kharge in the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency was huge and now his return to his parent party is being seen as a strengthening of the party ahead of the Assembly elections, and is also a pointer to the shape of things to come during the Lok Sabha general elections. Unlike in other parts of the country, in Karnataka, the Congress has managed to woo back its leaders from the BJP fold. A few weeks earlier, BJP MLC Puttanna also resigned from the BJP and joined the Congress.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai dismissed these desertions as of no consequence and expressed the confidence that the BJP was returning to power with a clear-cut majority of its own. The other BJP stalwart, BS Yeddyurappa refrained from making any comment on the departure of Chinchanasur.

The BJP veteran told media persons that only a few days ago, Chinchanasur vowed that he would not go anywhere, and here he is today switching sides. The BJP is ready for anything, the party veteran said dismissing suggestions that poll eve desertions were bad news for the BJP.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
