New Delhi: Shelly Oberoi from the AAP defeated the BJP’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes to become the mayor of Delhi. The votes counted for Shelly Oberoi were 150, while Rekha Gupta received 116 votes out of 266 votes. The election took place at the Civic Centre in Delhi. Aaley Mohammad Iqbal was elected as Deputy Mayor.
The highest court’s judgement, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena gave his approval to summon the municipal House for the mayoral election. In a blow to the AAP, the Supreme Court also ruled that members nominated to the MCD by the Lt Governor cannot vote to elect the mayor.
The Aam Aadmi Party has once again reposed faith in Dr Shelly Oberoi for the post of Mayor, while the BJP has changed its candidate this time. The party has fielded Shikha Rai in place of Rekha Gupta.

Municipal elections were held in December 2022, in which the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 wards out of a total of 250, while the BJP won 115 seats. After the election results, the date of January 2023 was first fixed for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, but the House had to be adjourned three times after the uproar and noise in the House.

On February 22, elections were held for the post of mayor and deputy mayor, in which the candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party won. As per the rules, the term of the mayor and deputy mayor had ended on March 31. Explain that the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, of 1957 has a provision to hold elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor in April at the beginning of the financial year.

According to the information, 14 MLAs of Delhi (one BJP, 13 Aam Aadmi Party) have been nominated from the assembly for voting in the mayoral election. Let us tell you that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is one of the largest civic bodies in the country.
