Journalist arrested for insulting temple, gets bail later

Odisha-based journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra, arrested on Thursday by the state police for allegedly making derogatory remarks on the Sun Temple, Konark, was granted bail by a Delhi court which directed him to join the probe. The court granted relief to Mitra on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety of the like amount on a plea moved by him, while directing him to join the investigation in the state by September 28.

Under full media glare, Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday shot dead two criminals, accused of murdering six persons including two Hindu priests, in Aligarh district. Local journalists and television crew were formally invited as the policemen, wearing bulletproof vests, were seen aiming their guns at the criminals, later identified as Naushad and Mustakeem, who were hiding in an abandoned building. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aligarh, Ajay Sahni, said the criminals were passing through a police checkpoint on a bike and when they were asked to stop. The criminals however tried to escape. Policemen chased them for about five kilometres.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of being anti-minority, anti-SC/ST and anti-Constitution, saying it was trying to divert people's attention from the failures of BJP government at the Centre and in various states. In a statement issued by her party, the four-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the three-day RSS programme in Delhi reflected the "tension" in the top echelons of BJP's mentor organization as the ruling party's popularity has dipped. "The RSS has put everything at stake for the BJP and now that the discontent against the Modi government at the Centre is at its peak, the RSS is also jittery," she said.

The Gujarat Government on Thursday doubled the personal accident insurance cover of farmers to Rs 2 lakh in case of death and from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh for physical impairment. Announcing this, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel told reporters that "We have decided to double the insurance amount to Rs 2 lakh in case of a farmer's death as well as permanent and full disability."

Government sources on Thursday dismissed as "factually incorrect" media reports of former Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chief T.S. Raju claiming that the defence undertaking had signed a work-share contract with French company Dassault Aviation -- the manufacturer of Rafale fighter jets. "In the news item published (Thursday) ex Chairman and Managing Director, (CMD) HAL has been quoted as stating that an agreed work-share with Dassault Aviation (DA) was submitted to government. The same news item also referred to the cost of the aircraft, life cycle cost issues, etc. The statement attributed to ex CMD, HAL is factually incorrect," said the sources.

2 unidentified militants killed in Kashmir

Two unidentified militants were killed in an ongoing counter militant operation launched by Army, CRPF & Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K Police in the Shukhbaba Sumlar area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir. "Two militants have been killed in the encounter. One militant's body has been recovered while the other is still at the encounter site", police said. Troops of counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had started a cordon and search operation in Sumlar village of Bandipora after specific information about the presence of militants.

The thaw came in the wake of a letter by new Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in which he had sought a meeting between foreign ministers Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that begins later this month in New York and holding of the 20th Saarc summit in Islamabad.

he CBI on Thursday arrested four persons including an Assistant Director of the Social Welfare Department in Bihar in connection with its ongoing investigation into the shelter home rape case in Muzaffarpur of the state. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that the agency has arrested Rosy Rani, Assistant Director, and three others -- Santosh, Guddu and Vijay -- from Muzaffarpur and Sonepur of Bihar.

Ten maulanas from various mosques in Goa conducted Quran Khawani, a ritualistic reading of the Quran, for quick recovery of ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, an official said on Thursday. "We had called the maulanas from all over Goa to conduct the Quran Khawani, which invokes the good grace of Allah, at the BJP's South Goa headquarters to pray for the quick recovery of our Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar," BJP's Minority Morcha President Shaikh Jina told IANS. Jina said that Parrikar, who is currently being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for advanced pancreatic cancer, had resolved several issues related to the Muslim community in Goa. "He has resolved several outstanding issues related to our community which includes making Goa the embarkation point for Haj travel, building of a Haj House in the education sector," Jina said.
