Zomato announced ‘District’ on August 1, a new app that would incorporate its ‘going-out’ business consisting of dining, movies, and other events tickets. This is an ambitious expansion outside its origin in the food-delivery business and hyperlocal commerce.
The development, which comes with a letter from CEO Deepinder Goyal to its shareholders, would be the first for Zomato toward entry into more lifestyle services. The new app, called District, will offer dining out, movies, sports ticketing, live performances, and shopping, along with staycations under a single platform.

“Today, Zomato and Blinkit are our only two major consumer businesses. However, we also have one of the biggest ‘going-out’ businesses for customers looking for restaurants to dine in,” Goyal said, though he did not specify when the app will be available for downloads. Noting that the business is currently running at an annualized gross order value of over $500 million and is already profitable he added,” Yes.”.

“We see an opportunity to further expand our out-of-home offerings based on the dining-out business. Other initiatives that could engage consumers are movies, sports ticketing, live events, shopping, and staycations. Some of these we have already rolled out and some we are in the process of doing,” Goyal said.
This puts Zomato against the likes of an app like BookMyShow, which commands 60% of the online movie ticket booking space in India and also comes bundled with reservations for movies, events, and now restaurants.
