Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand Hinduja passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in London. He was one of the wealthiest businessmen in the UK. Now, the big question is who will take charge as his successor in the family.
There are several contenders within the family, and it seems that it will not be an easy task for the company to pick an heir. So far, no one has emerged as a top contender for the helm of affairs.
If we go by the current structure, Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja are placed in the second line of command in the group, and one of them could be a potential candidate to take the legacy forward. Prakash is Chairman of Hinduja Group (Europe), while Ashok Hinduja is Chairman of India operations.
Gopichand Hinduja’s two sons-Dheeraj Hinduja and Sanjay Hinduja-could also be among the probables. Dheeraj serves as Chairman of Ashok Leyland, while Sanjay Hinduja heads Gulf Oil.
Prakash Hinduja’s son, Shom Hinduja, and Gopichand’s elder brother Srichand Hinduja’s daughters, Vinoo and Shanu Hinduja, may also be considered for the top job.
The four Hinduja brothers had signed a letter in 2014 stating that they believed in joint ownership.
A tussle was already observed in 2020 when Vinoo Hinduja challenged the enforceability of the 2014 letter as Srichand Hinduja’s “litigation friend,” citing a lasting power of attorney signed in 2015 due to his illness. Later, she came to the table for settlement and ended the dispute in 2023.
