Apple on Monday named veteran researcher Amar Subramanya as the new vice president of AI. He is replacing John Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018 and will now serve as an adviser to the company before his planned retirement in spring 2026. Subramanya will directly report to software chief Craig Federighi and head various key areas such as AI safety and evaluation, Apple Foundation models, etc.
“AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple,” Apple CEO Tim Cook announced. After Microsoft pulled 20 researchers from Google’s DeepMind, Apple has now hired talent from its competitors. The United States AI sector has become a quick-moving circuit of top experts, with the hiring of immigrants like Subramanya.
