New Delhi: In an unusual development, Meta-owned WhatsApp is foraying into the film industry and will have its first original short film, named “Naija Odyssey,” premiere on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.
The NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, is the subject of the 12-minute short film.
“The Greek Freak. That’s not me, that’s not all of me. Naija Odyssey, the cross-culture story of Giannis by WhatsApp. Stream Sept 21 on Prime Video,” WhatsApp said in a tweet.

WhatsApp’s entry into entertainment with the 12-minute short film is a first for a social media messaging service.
Although Antetokounmpo recently signed an endorsement deal with the business, another first for the platform, “Naija Odyssey” seems to be an attempt to promote WhatsApp, according to Variety.
“‘Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives. In navigating relationships, identity, and even adversity, WhatsApp is there a” enabling you to embrace all sides of you by connecting you to those who matter most,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Additionally, WhatsApp’s social media accounts, including its YouTube channel, will post the 12-minute film.
The Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo won the title of “NBA All-Star Game MVP” in 2021.
The “Naija Odyssey,” which is narrated by Antetokounmpo and his mother and depicts many events in his life, is based on the well-known Greek epic literature “The Odyssey.”
