New Delhi: Due to supply crunch, tomato prices have shot up in last few weeks in the country. Rates have increased to more than Rs 100 per kg level in some cities of the nation. Recently prices of other food items like onion, garlic, capsicum, bottle gourd and spinach were also reported to be trading at higher levels.
Tomato prices Rise To Up To Rs 120 per kg in Nagpur
Citing wholesale rates, news daily, ‘Times of India’ reported translated retail prices of the love apple to be around Rs 120 per kilogram in Nagpur. In New Delhi and Mumbai, online food delivery apps showed tomato prices of more than Rs 100 per kg. In the national capital, garlic was available at more than Rs 500 per kg. While, capsicum was available around Rs 200 per 1000 gm. Torrents of rain during the current monsoon season has reportedly impacted supply and transportation of the food items. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), India has received eight per cent above normal rainfall during the rainfall season 2024.
Tomato Prices Rise 38% In Last One Year: GoI
Department of Consumer Affairs showed average price of the love apple has increased 38% in last one month from Rs 44 per kg to Rs 61.68 per 1,000 gm in the country. Andhra Pradesh is the largest tomato producing state in India. Madanapalle in Annamayya district is the largest tomato producing market in Andhra Pradesh. The agricultural commodity is supplied to various parts of the country from Madanapalle. The wholesale price as quoted by APMC in the largest tomato producing market in Andhra Pradesh is Rs 7,100 per quintal up 31% in last one week from Rs 5,400 per quintal.
While, in the wholesale market, the Consumer Affairs Department showed prices of the love apple have shot up 41% to Rs 5,044.83 per quintal from Rs 3,561.52 a month earlier. One quintal is equal to 100 kg.
