Meta: To stop “suspicious” identities from messaging teenagers on Facebook and Instagram, Meta is experimenting with new techniques. Meta will modify the default privacy settings on Facebook for anyone under the age of 16.

Teenagers will now be urged to use Facebook’s suggested privacy settings, which automatically restrict who can view their friend list, who can see the people, pages, and lists they follow, who can view posts they are tagged in on their profile, allow them to review posts they are tagged in, and restrict who can comment on their public posts.

To “prevent minors from messaging questionable adults they are not connected to,” other improvements will be introduced. According to Meta, if an adult’s account has “recently been blocked or reported by a young child,” it will be flagged as suspicious.

It is also experimenting with completely removing the messaging option from teen users’ Instagram accounts if questionable accounts visit their profiles.

Teenagers will begin receiving safety notifications from Meta that include instructions on how to report harassment. Teenagers who have blocked accounts are encouraged to report them by the firm.

According to the business, reports sent by “minors in Q1 2022 compared the previous quarter on Messenger and Instagram DMs” increased by 70%.

The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Meta are collaborating to create “a global platform” for teenagers who are concerned about “intimate photographs” being shared online.
