Share Market: Sensex Tumbled 609 Points THIS Week – What’s Impacting The Dalal Street?

India’s share market indices, Sensex and Nifty50, closed in green on Friday, May 23, 2025. The Sensex (index with top 30 firms) surged 769.09 points to close at 81,721.08 points on Friday. Meanwhile, Nifty50 (index with top 50 firms) closed 243.45 points higher at 24,853.15. Among the Sensex-packed stocks, 29 advanced, while only 1 saw decline.

Last week, on Friday, May 16, 2025, the Sensex tumbled 200.15 points to close at 82,330.59, and the Nifty50 closed 42.30 points lower at 25,019.80.

Analysing the data for the week, Sensex tumbled 609.51 points and Nifty was down 166.65 points in a week. Moreover, foreign investors infused Rs 13,835 crores in the Indian equities this month, so far.

Last week, foreign investors were seen increasing their short positions in the derivatives segment, which led to market volatility throughout the week. This week, Indian benchmark indices also tracked the cues from the US markets. The market mood remained cautious globally as trade tensions and fiscal issues in the US cast a shadow on investor sentiment.

This week, the markets closed in green for only 2 days, Wednesday and Friday. Indian share market was also influenced by the global sentiment, which remained weak due to rising concerns over debt and deficit levels in the United States. Furthermore, the pressure in the bond markets worldwide has impacted investor mood, as markets reacted to US President Donald Trump’s debt financing and spending plans.

  • The Sensex tumbled 271.17 points to close at 82,059.42 on Monday. Meanwhile, Nifty50 was down 74.35 points to close at 24,945.45 points.
  • Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Sensex tumbled 872.98 points to close at 81,186.44, and the Nifty50 was down 261.55 points to close at 24,683.90 points.
  • The Sensex surged 410.19 points to close at 81,596.63 on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Nifty50 was up 129.55 points to close at 24,813.45 points.

On Thursday, the Sensex tumbled 644.64 points to close at 80,951.99, and Nifty50 was down 203.75 points to close at 24,609.70 points.
