Shaktikanta Das Highlights 6 Key Challenges For The New RBI Governor – What Are They?

“The new RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has vast experience, I am sure he will do his best,” said Das during the speech.

As he bowed out as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Shaktikanta Das reflected on his tenure, which began on December 12, 2018, with a vision to foster a team-driven and consultative culture within the country’s central bank. “In the last six years it has been my endeavour to stick to the principles which we outlined. We had a wide range of consultation on various issues,” said Das, in a press conference on Tuesday.

As Shaktikanta Das hands over the top position, he outlined six key priorities for his successor, Sanjay Malhotra, to focus on as the new Governor of the central bank.

  1. Restore growth inflation balance.
  2. Remain alert in a changing world.
  3. Take cybersecurity and cyber challenges seriously.
  4. Capitalise on harnessing benefits of new technology.
  5. Pioneer CBDC, it has a huge potential in the future.
  6. Financial inclusion.

What Shaktikanta Das Said About New RBI Governor?

“The new RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has vast experience, I am sure he will do his best,” said Das during the speech. Furthermore, in his farewell press conference as Reserve Bank’s Governor, Shaktikanta Das highlighted the key challenges his successor, Sanjay Malhotra, will face, including adapting to the evolving global landscape, mitigating cyber threats, and leveraging emerging technologies to drive growth.

Additionally, the outgoing RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das expressed his hope that incoming Governor Sanjay Malhotra will continue to drive key RBI initiatives, including the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and the unified lending interface (ULI), with a focus on promoting financial inclusion.

Sanjay Malhotra, currently serving as Revenue Secretary, is set to take the reins as the new Governor of the RBI starting December 11, 2024. Malhotra, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Rajasthan Cadre. Furthermore, he holds a degree in Computer Science Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Additionally, he possesses a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the renowned Princeton University in the United States.
