A new way to pay through UPI has been approved by the centre. In that, we will not require any PIN, and those who have forgotten their PIN can now pay securely using voice and face. Wearable smart glasses can also be used to make small value payments via UPI Lite simply by scanning a QR. You don’t require a mobile number to for a ‘hands-free payment’.
How this is possible?
Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar announced the launch of the digital payment innovations at the ongoing Global Fintech Fest 2025 here. NPCI, in a statement, said that the new feature allows users to do complete hands-free and secure transactions by simply scanning a QR, authenticating and completing payments through voice on smart glasses. PIN isn’t required.

“This launch marks the first time UPI is extended to the wearable ecosystem, representing a step towards ambient payments by enabling seamless digital payments,” NPCI said.
Benefits of the new feature
The new feature, which will embed UPI Lite into smart glasses, benefits the bank. It will help them reduce their workload on core banking systems. Additionally, it will further India’s leadership in digital payment innovation.
Embedding UPI Lite on smart glasses enhances convenience for consumers and strengthens India’s leadership in digital payment innovation globally, NPCI said.
